DVD review: Deadly Nam (2006)

At the height of the Vietnam War, the experienced squad Sergeant Frank Castle (Hendrik Thiele) and his men are sent on a top-secret reconnaissance mission into a previously unknown sector. Their mission: to assess the Vietcong activity and explore the unknown terrain. But what at first sounds like a routine mission, turns quickly into a fight for survival! Deadly Nam is written by Hendrik Thiele and directed by Markus Hagen. Bad acting, most of it is intentional as this is both a homage and a spoof of the Hollywood Viernam war movies such as Aaron Norris flick Platoon Leader and Cirio H. Santiagos Vietnam war movies.. Obviously some the actors have taken the parts a little more seriously, this is noticeable when looking at the actors. The camerawork and editing is pretty okay. There is some use of stock footage to complement a totally ridiculous helicopter mock-up (it´s actually shot inside mini-van) and a airplane cockpit. Add to this that we get one the  most incredible and fake mustache ever. And apparently there were not any colored people in the circle of friends who did Deadly Nam as one actors has used greasepaint or shoe polish to blacken his skin to look as a afro-american. There is some gore, blown off limbs, some juicy squibs now and then but the make-up fx highlight is, without a doubt, the napalmburn victims. There is no T & A in this.
This review is based upon the german region 2 DVD release from Ascot Elite Home Entertainment, it´s uncut and german language only.
Rating: 0½ out of 7. You get what is expected when pressing play, this is Northern Germany´s first Vietnam war movie ever and probably the last. We all the clichee´s of all the bad Vietnam b-movies and even it this is not to be taken seriously it´s to badly made to entertain.
