DVD review: The Sleeper (2012)

It's 1981 and the girls of Alpha Gamma Theta sorority are having a party. Amy (Brittany Belland), sick of living in the dorms, invites her roommate Ava (Ali Ferda) to attend the party with her in hopes that they'll both become Thetas. As the girls arrive, so does an uninvited guest watching them in the shadows. Amy's choice quickly becomes a nightmare as the Theta girls begin to disappear one by one. Announcing his victims, the killer calls the house whispering the next to die. The police hunt for the missing girls and the killer, but will they find him in time? Or will all the girls sleep for good? The Sleeper is written and directed by Justin Russell and it is an homage to the classic slasher films of the 1980s which means that you can expect the common clichés. It´s a very good looking film, professionally shot and edited, the pacing is excellent and I love the soundtrack. Decent acting and there is a lot, and I do mean a lot, of cute girls and a little bit of nudity courtesy of Riana Ballo who is smoking hot!! But beside Riana´s scene there is no nudity which seems a bit odd as the slashers from the 1980s usually feaured gratious nudity.
The killing scenes are pretty effective and are quite gory but it´s not a gorefest, it´s all practical fx but looks a bit amateurish.
This review is based upon the region 1 DVD release from Gamma Knife Films.
Rating: 6½ out of 7. Justin Russell set out to make an homage to the classic slasher films of the 1980s and he succeeded so check it out. The Sleeper is highly recommended to fans of slasher flicks! I´m looking forward to see what the Justin Russell will offer in the future.
