DVD review: Zombie Apocalypse (2011)
Months after a zombie plague has wiped out 90 percent of the American population, a small group of survivors fight their way cross-country to a rumored refuge on the island of Catalina. Zombie Apocalypse is written by Brooks Peck and Craig Engler and is directed by Nick Lyon. The acting is decent, the high point being Ving Rhames as Big-guy Henry who carries a big old sledgehammer to bash in the skulls of zombies while Taryn Manning is the low point as she is utterly terrible. The cinematography is pretty nice, the apocalyptic LA landscape is done fairly well, the editing is good and the pacing is acceptable. There is a lot of gore (a lot of zombies being killed by arrows, by gunshots, by sword, by baseball bat and sledgehammer) but it´s mostly computer gendered splatter and lacks any real impact and the zombies make-up is just awful. No T & A in this.
This review is based on the region 1 DVD release from The Asylum Home Entertainment.
Rating: 2½ out of 7. Zombie Apocalypse is decent if you take it for what it is. It would have been better if there would have been more practical make-up fx and gore and some changes in the cast.
